In my opinion FreeNAS development has slowed to a point where it does not make sense to use it any more. Major bugs (such as slow SAMBA and poor ZFS performance) have shown themselves to impossible to eliminate without major design changes. It seems that two major project have arisen which explicitly see themselves as providing FreeNAS like functionality but based on new designs which hopefully avoid the limitations of FreeNAS: PulsarOS and OpenMediaVault.
With OMV now nearing an intial release, I was wondering if a status update on pulsarOS could be written up? For me, and I imagine many others, I am keen to start testing and extending upon a new NAS platform that will hopefully be around for some time to come. I know from experience that once I have suck a significant amount of time into one system I may well be reluctant to start hacking on a new one. However I feel that PulsarOS has, on paper, made the better design choices and would love to see something out around the same time OMVs release so I can compare and see which system I would want to commit to. Could we hear a little more about the state of this project?

Right now I'm working very hard to create a first functional version of the frontend. The backend is finished and working. The pictures, which you can see on the frontpage are from the current status of the gui.
I'm going to publish a pre-release of 0.5alpha when the share configuration (at least the Samba configuration) is done. If all is going well it could be this weekend ;-) But don't await a fully functional NAS system like Freenas. It's more a prototype to play with to: .) Create pool (Raid0, 1, 10) .) Create volumes .) Add Shares to this volumes .) Configure samba as share So stay tuned! |
